Tunisia: parity for women in the municipal!

On May 6, Tunisia will have its first municipal elections since the fall of President Ben Ali in 2011. Indeed Tunisians will go to the polls this Sunday, for the first free and democratic municipal elections in their history, in a tense political context. Unheard of in a country in the Arab world, the government has introduced fair lists for women and men, including for each party or coalition.

The two main formations, Nidaa Tounes and the Islamists of Ennahdha, respected the rule. There are therefore 580 women heads of lists, more than a quarter (2.074 lists in total), while a hundred lists were discarded for non-compliance with the parity (…)
