Every year, September 8, International Literacy Day is celebrated to highlight the importance of literacy to citizens, communities and associations.

Over the past five decades, the concept of literacy has evolved from simple basic skills in reading, writing and numeracy to encompass broader notions such as functional literacy and the foundation for lifelong learning.

Today, despite the progress made, the problems of literacy persist unequally between countries and populations.
